Rodi Garganico was a Cretan inhabited area, then Greek and rhodium. It preserves traces of an imposing fortification system. The historic center of Rodi Garganico, of medieval origin, as well as the remains of the still visible city walls, is characterized by narrow alleys and stairways. Due to the particular layout of the buildings, from each dwelling it is possible to see the sea, this is because originally the local economy was mainly based on fishing and looking out it was possible to go offshore or not.The Sanctuary of the Madonna della Libera it houses within it a famous Byzantine icon that was stolen by the Venetians in 1453 in Constantinople; during the journey to Venice the galley on which the icon was transported ran aground and managed to leave only after it was left in the Gargano town. The sanctuary was originally an extra moenia church but was later incorporated into the city. Made in Apulian baroque, inside it preserves four eighteenth-century canvases of the Neapolitan school. The mother church, dedicated to San Nicola di Mira, was built in 1680 even if the consecration took place only in 1826. Of very simple forms has the main facade devoid of decorations ; the bell tower is of previous construction (it dates back to the 12th century) and initially had defensive functions. It ends with a bubo dome in the eastern Gothic style. The interior is also very simple, with a single nave, has some side altars; the main altar is dedicated to San Cristoforo, patron saint of the city and is in late Apulian-Baroque style.
