TERRITORY

 

The island is home to one of the 20 Marine Nature Reserves in Italy which makes it a true paradise for divers. On the island there is the Ustica meteorological station, officially recognized by the World Meteorological Organization.
To connect the island to Palermo there is a special ferry service using modern catamarans and hydrofoils.
The most fascinating natural feature is the presence of numerous caves that open along the high and steep coasts, as well as numerous rocks and shoals present all around the island; visitable with a boat trip are the Verde grotto, the Blue grotto, the Grotta della Pastizza, the Grotta dell’Oro, the Grotta delle Colonne and the rocks of the Medico and the Colombara. However, in the island’s scarce water resources even the natural vegetation is meager. Ustica is also known to be the natural habitat of Apis mellifera sicula.

 

SITES OF HISTORICAL, CULTURAL AND RELIGIOUS INTEREST

Ferdinando Re Church: right in the town center, it dominates the square of Ustica. Built in 1771, it was entrusted to the Capuchin fathers. In 1972 it was enriched by statues made of ceramic.

 

Tower of Santa Maria: It is a coastal defense tower that was part of the system of coastal towers of Sicily, and stands on the little hill just above the port of Cala Santa Maria falling in the municipal area of ​​Ustica .

 

Spalmatore Aquarium: Located within the marine reserve, it contains a fair collection of aquatic species from the Mediterranean.

 

Village of Tramontana: not far from the inhabited center, prehistoric village of the Bronze Age located in the locality of the same name.

 

Village of the Rocca Falconiera: it is found mixed with the remains of an advanced fort, the Rivellino of San Giuseppe, and to the fortress with which at the end of the 18th century the military works of the island were completed in defense of the next re-colonization after the destruction caused by Barbary pirates.
